Lumberg Elementary School Reports Students Handling Unused Pediatric Lancets

Edgewater, Colorado  (February 5, 2015) – Today, at approximately 7:30 a.m. a parent reported to staff at Lumberg Elementary school in Edgewater that her child had been pinched by a sharp object at school.  According to law enforcement, a student in the fifth grade brought several small lancets into her classroom. Multiple children in the grade were interviewed. The district’s Department of Health Services was immediately consulted.

Three of the lancets were recovered and have been preserved as evidence. These lancets are small plastic boxes housing small sharps that are routinely used to collect drops of blood from infants and toddlers by medical staff during well checks.

Parents of children who were believed to have been affected were notified in person by school staff and encouraged to seek medical advice. An informational letter was sent to the Lumberg parent community.
