ESL/Dual Language

Welcome English Language Learners and Families!

Jeffco Schools’ classrooms are enriched with more than 10,000 English Language Learners who speak more than 125 different world languages. We are dedicated to honoring and valuing the diverse cultural and language backgrounds of English Language Learners. We believe that English Language Learners contribute to creating a strong academic environment where diverse communities thrive. The Jeffco 2020 vision encapsulates our beliefs to ensure all Jeffo graduates will be able to successfully apply the following competencies: Content Mastery, Civic and Global Engagement, Communication, Critical Thinking and Creativity, and Self-Direction and Personal Responsibility.

The English as a Second Language (ESL)/Dual Language Department collaborates with Jeffco staff in offering English Language Development (ELD) support or Dual Language Education; both are designed to accelerate student learning and engagement in the greater school community. The ESL/Dual Language Department also collaborates with Jeffco staff to build effective parental and community involvement that promotes student achievement.

Each English language learner has an English Language Learner Plan developed by their teachers based on individual student needs. The Plans include language proficiency assessment data, goals, and language development progress. The Plan follows the student until the student reaches Fluent English Proficient designation and hasexited the English as a Second Language Program. The intent is to ensure each English language learner is making appropriate progress toward language fluency and academic mastery.


Elementary Level: English as a Second Language (ESL)

All elementary schools offer English language development support for all English language learners. English language development Instruction focuses on language and literacy skills essential for English language learners to engage meaningfully with classroom instruction across all content areas, attain grade-level competencies, and meet challenging state academic standards.


Secondary Level: English as a Second Language (ESL)

At the secondary level (middle and high schools), a variety of ESL courses are offered at all secondary schools (except for West Jeff MS, Conifer HS, Evergreen MS, and Evergreen HS). ESL Teachers follow Jeffco ESL curriculum, utilize resources and implement appropriate instructional strategies to ensure all English language learners receive rigorous English language development. ESL Staff work with content area teachers so all English language learners have access to core content. The goal is for all students to graduate with choices and have the skills to be career and college ready.

Based on individual needs, student will be scheduled into a Secondary ESL course. The course offerings include:

  • ESL 1-5
  • Reading Strategies
  • Literacy Acceleration
  • Sheltered Language Arts

Dual Language PK - 12

Jeffco Schools offer Spanish Native Language Instruction preschools as well as elementary Dual Language programs in Spanish and English and secondary Spanish courses. Instruction for these programs is offered in English and Spanish so that students:

  • Achieve at high academic levels across all content areas in both English and Spanish
  • Develop high levels of linguistic proficiency in English and Spanish, and use what they have learned in both languages to succeed academically and socially
  • Demonstrate positive cross-cultural attitudes and behaviors
