Jeffco Public Schools hit some all-time academic highs according to the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) results released in August. The district as a whole has typically scored above the state average – and it is an accurate reflection of accomplishment considering the district has over a 95% participation rate.

"CMAS is a more challenging state test than previous assessments," says Chief Academic Officer Matt Flores. "These results show our kids know more, use the knowledge effectively, and are prepared for the real world."

Simply put, achievement is the measure of students’ attainment of grade level expectations. Jeffco’s CMAS scores exceeded the state in virtually all grades and content areas; PSAT and SAT scores also outpaced state results.

Conifer High School is one example of CMAS achievement increases. Conifer’s scale score in English Language Arts increased 17.7 points, and Math increased 7.5 points. "Conifer’s CMAS successes in English and mathematics were the result of the staff working collaboratively across content areas, using formative assessments results to determine effective instructional practices and address student learning needs," Principal Wes Paxton enthusiastically explains. "Teachers in English, social studies, and science used active reading strategies to support comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary skills for all students. The math teachers worked collaboratively in teams using MDC (Math Design Collaborative) strategies to identify and address common misconceptions."

2017 Jeffco CMAS results math

*Approximately one-third of Jeffco’s eighth grade students are included in CMAS Algebra I and Geometry assessment results instead of the standard grade 8 math assessment, so state comparisons are not equivalent for the single assessment (grade 8 CMAS Math) in which Jeffco did not exceed state performance.
**Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 results are reflective of all students who took these assessments regardless of grade level (e.g. Geometry results include students in grades 8 and 9).
