Pomona Celebration Performance at Boettcher Auditorium

The Pomona High School Band and alumni will perform their last concert under the direction of W. L. Whaley on Tuesday, May 1.  Pomona Elementary and Moore Middle School band students have also been invited to perform.  The concert will be at The Boettcher Concert Hall—Denver Performing Arts Complex, located at 1000 14th St., Denver.  The concert will begin at 7 p.m. 

Tickets are $14 for adults and $9 for students.  Children under three years of age are free.  Tickets at the door will sell for $15 for adult and $10 for student.  For ticket sales information click on this link or for more information on other events honoring the Pomona High School, 20-year director of instrumental music, W.L. Under Whaley's direction, the Pomona music program has received national attention for excellence. The Pomona program offers three concert bands, an award-winning marching band, two jazz ensembles, winter guard, winter percussion ensemble and orchestra. Pomona's Marching Band has long been the pride of Arvada with more than 200 performers and is an 11-time Colorado Bandmasters' Association Class 5A State Champion (1994-96, 1998-2005). The Pomona Band has also marched twice in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade (1996 and 2005) and in the London New Year's Day Parade (2001 and 2006), not to mention its annual performance in the Arvada Harvest Festival Parade.

DVDs and CDs of past concerts and competitions will be on sale at the concert in the lobby.

Warren Tech Administrator Receives State Award

Bob Veges, assistant principal at Warren Tech in Lakewood, was awarded Colorado Skills USA Advisor of the Year at the recent Skills USA state conference in Colorado Springs. This award was given in recognition of his hard work and dedication to students, advisors, and the entire Skills USA organization. Skills USA is a national student organization designed to promote leadership and excellence in career and technical programs.

Bob Veges began his career in 1976 at Pueblo East High School as a graphic arts instructor. His influence on career and technical education was felt state-wide as he moved from Pueblo East High School to Warren Tech in 1979. Ben Nesbitt, Colorado State Director of Skills USA, was in Mr. Veges' first graphic arts class and says Mr. Veges had a great influence on his career path.

Mr. Veges became a Warren Tech assistant principal in 2001. As assistant principal, he coordinates Skills USA school-wide activities for over 600 student members. Of the 25 programs at Warren Tech, 17 participate in Skills USA by competing in contests and performing community service activities.
