Clifford the Big Red Dog gives away books to avoid the summer slide

Jeffco is partnering with Scholastic to give kids in need summer reading books.  Every child in Jeffco’s Title 1 elementary and middle schools will get to take home a pack of eight books (four fiction and four non-fiction) to read over their summer vacation.  Studies show that many children lose valuable reading skills during the summer break, putting them behind when they begin school in August.  Using money from Title 1 funds, Jeffco is buying approximately 72,000 books from Scholastic to give to students.  The books come with tips for parents on how to help their children become life-long readers.

• On Thursday, May 27, at 5:15 p.m., students and parents at Fitzmorris Elementary (6250 Independence St., Arvada) will be given books by Clifford the Big Red Dog.

• On Friday, May 28, from 9-10 a.m., Clifford will be giving out books at Molholm Elementary (6000 W. 9th Ave., Lakewood).
