GED Programs

A GED is equivalent to a high school diploma that can be used to apply for college or a job. It is a credential a student earns by passing exams on four key high school subjects: language arts, mathematics, social studies and science.

With a GED, an individual may have more job opportunities and the potential to earn a higher salary than without earning a high school diploma. Today, many colleges accept students with a GED in place of a traditional high school diploma.

Jeffco offers adult education, GED and GED Plus programs that provide students with academic and workplace skills in addition to GED prep and testing.

GED

GED plus program at McLain Community High School

The McLain GED Plus program has an educational goal that all students not only pass the GED but are also informed and prepared for a career or post-secondary education. McLain offers numerous resources in the building and relationships in the community that guide students in taking those next steps. Educators work with students to develop a learning plan that best suits their academic readiness as determined by the GED READY pre-test.

The purpose of this learning community is to provide students seeking their GED with the motivation and academic support needed to pass their GED in addition to making post-GED plans.

Experienced educators teach Jeffco high school curriculum in English, math, science and social studies. Elective credits can be earned for work experience.

Enrollment eligibility and GED program information

Must be 17 years or older at the time of enrollment.
Courses are offered every six weeks.
Applicants must have withdrawn from their last school at least 30 days prior to enrollment.
Students will be pre-tested for the math and English portions of the GED to determine if a structured or self-paced learning plan is best.
Attendance is required.

Adult Education

McLain Community High School offers adult diploma programs that help adults of all ages earn a high school diploma while developing self-confidence, honing academic and workplace skills and preparing for careers and college. Core classes are taught in person, during six-week sessions with day and evening options.

McLain’s daytime adult education program

Students take three to four classes at a time.
Classes meet Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
2023-24 classes start dates: Aug. 15, Sept. 25, Nov. 6, Jan. 4, Feb. 20, April 8.
Classes require at least 83% attendance.

McLain’s evening adult education program

Students take two classes at a time.
Classes meet Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 5:55 p.m.–8:30 p.m.
2023-24 classes start dates: Aug. 14, Sept. 25, Nov. 6, Jan. 8, Feb. 20, April 8.
Classes require at least 83% attendance.

Fees (Financial Aid Available): Age 18–20: $80 per semester; Ages 21+: $155 per semester.

Next Arvada is located at Red Rocks Community College Arvada Campus. The program is done in partnership with Jefferson County Public Schools and Red Rocks Community College. The site can serve nearly 120 students from Jefferson County Public Schools and other participating districts. Program perks cover:

Based out of Littleton Public Schools Education Services Center, Next Littleton is a collaborative effort between three school districts and one college partner: Arapahoe Community College, Englewood Schools, Littleton Public Schools and Jefferson County Public Schools. The site has a rolling enrollment and can serve roughly 120 students from the participating districts. Program perks cover:

Jefferson County Business and Workforce Center Youth Services

Business and Workforce Center Youth Services offers numerous free services to individuals, ages 14 to 24, in Jefferson, Gilpin and Clear Creek Counties. This is a federally-funded program that helps youth develop job readiness skills and get connected to employment opportunities.

Youth Services also offers free assistance in supporting youth to obtain their high school diploma, GED or post-secondary certificate and training (two years or less).

GED and the Military

The most consistent guidance over the past three years has been that a GED alone is not sufficient for enlistment. Students have been able to join with a GED and 15 semester hours of college. It is advised that you work directly with the recruiter.
