Jefferson County offers several options for students who are interested in learning in an alternative or experiential environment.

Brady Exploration School

Brady offers whole person development for 9-12 students. The school features a low student/teacher ratio and multi-age classrooms with a goal of developing self-directed learners. The program focuses on relationships, rigor, relevance and readiness to go to the next level or into the workplace. The curriculum stresses hands-on, experiential learning. The school will promote a collaborative school, family and community partnership.

Jefferson County Open School

The High School program focuses on growth in three domains: personal identity, social interaction and intellectual inquiry. This holistic curriculum is reflected in the twenty-four graduation expectations and the incorporation of personal goals in an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) which is carried out in mutually agreeable programs worked out between each student and advisor.

Eligibility and Enrollment Information

  • Jeffco Open is a Pre K through 12th grade school
  • The high school accepts students ages 14 and older

Enrollment process

  • Prior to students being placed on the lottery list, parents and students must attend an orientation meeting
  • All students must visit the school
  • Students must write an essay following the guidelines presented to them during orientation

McLain Community High School

McLain is the premier provider of alternative education for Jefferson County Public Schools. Whether in a classroom setting, online distance learning, or a combination of methods, we work with our students to help them achieve academic successs. Smaller class sizes and innovative curricula allow us to better serve the needs of those students who have experienced difficulties in a traditional high school setting.

Long View High School

Long View High School is a unique educational option. As its name implies, Long View High School emphasizes commitment and taking the long view on helping its students achieve success. Long View is designed to serve those high school students whose needs are not being met by traditional, comprehensive high schools. The school-to-work transition is Long View's hallmark stressing basic academic, vocational, and personal skills.
