Links to Literacy

The Links to Literacy Program is an integrated adult education, early childhood education, and parent education program that facilitates parents and children learning together through literacy activities.

Links to Literacy provides English language instruction, basic literacy skills, and civics instruction using a life skills curriculum for participating parents. While the parents are in class, children attend the preschool that provides developmentally appropriate activities that promote early reading, writing, and peer socialization.

Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY)

HIPPY empowers parents as primary educators of their children and fosters parent involvement in school and community life to maximize the chances of successful early school learning experiences.

The Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters is a scientifically research based program proven to be an effective early intervention program that empowers parents to teach their 3, 4, and 5 year old children, and prepares them to succeed in school.

Parents work with their children daily reading books and performing related activities to teach their child basic concepts that include:

  • Language Development
  • Problem Solving
  • Logical Thinking
  • Creativity
  • Self Concept

Home visitors, who are AmeriCorps members and past parents in the program, visit the home weekly to role-play the lessons. Through activity packets and special HIPPY storybooks, HIPPY brings literacy into the home. HIPPY materials are available in Spanish and English.

Enrichment meetings are held at the neighborhood elementary school to connect parents with community resources and support the home-school connection.

Families living in the Jefferson High School (Edgewater, Lumberg, Martensen, Molholm and Stevens) and Deane, Eiber, Lasley, Foster, Lawrence, Russell, Pennington and Stein Elementary attendance areas who have a 3, 4,or 5-year-old child may participate in Jeffco HIPPY.

Children who were enrolled in the Age 4 program the previous year are eligible to participate in the Age 5 program.

Enrollment for Jeffco HIPPY program year begins in September.  Families who are interested in enrolling may contact Michelle Brown at 303-982-0014.
