Outdoor Education
The mission of the Outdoor Education Laboratory Program is to enhance and enrich student learning as an integral part of 6th grade curricula by providing opportunities for hands-on, experiential, authentic learning in an outdoor setting. In addition, OELS fosters opportunities for student growth in environmental stewardship through an enhanced awareness, appreciation, and sense of responsibility for the environment, themselves and others. Support the Lab programs by donating to The Outdoor Lab Foundation, a non-profit organization.There are generations of Jeffco students who look back on their Outdoor Lab adventure and say it was one of their best memories of elementary school. Thankfully, next year’s 6th graders will have a chance to explore all of the wonders offered by the Mt. Evans and Windy Peak schools.
Under a sustainability plan tentatively approved by the Jefferson County Board of Education, the Outdoor Lab schools will be saved for the 2012-2013 school year.
Every participating school will be charged a fee that will be based on its free and reduced lunch percentage; it will be up to the school and its community to raise the money needed to send its students to Outdoor Lab. Some fundraising will benefit each participating student by crediting her/his Outdoor Lab account. Check with individual schools for their fundraising activities and student costs.
