Jeffco CSAP scores improve for 2007

In the 2007 Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP) scores, Jeffco Public Schools continues to exceed the state performance in all content areas at every grade level.  Jeffco also shows an improvement from its 2006 scores with gains in reading, math and science.

“We are very pleased with the improvement in our scores this year,” said Jeffco Public Schools Superintendent Cindy Stevenson.  “We owe this increase in achievement to the hard work of our students, teachers, principals and parents.”

In reading and math, Jeffco students showed strong performance in the “Advanced and Proficient” CSAP scores.  Some other highlights from Jeffco CSAP results:

  • Compared to 2006, male students are showing progress on four of eight reading tests, although female students continue to outperform males in reading.

  • Special education students increased Advanced/Proficient performance on five of the eight CSAP reading tests.

  • Jeffco students improved in science by 2 to 5 percentage points.

  • Advanced/Proficient scores for Hispanic students have shown progress at many grade levels.

“While we are proud about this year’s results, we know we have some work to do.  We will continue to strive for greatness and for the day that all of our students score Proficient or Advanced,” said Stevenson.  “We’re hoping that our new guaranteed curriculum, which means all Jeffco students have access to the same content, will be a tool we can use to focus on improvement.”

CSAP results, students scoring Advanced/Proficient by grade level and content area, are as follows:

Weber Elementary students and staff relocated for beginning of school year

Weber Elementary students will be attending classes in different schools until mid-October because of an arson fire on the last day of classes in June. The fire destroyed 50 percent of the school, located in Arvada, and although construction crews have worked through the summer, the building will not be ready for students by the start of school on August 22.

More than 50,000 square feet of the 35-year-old building was ruined by fire and smoke, causing $6.5 million in damages. Students from Weber will attend classes in the following locations:

• Kindergarten: Warder Elementary, 7840 Carr Dr., Arvada
• Grades one and two: Zerger Elementary, 9050 Field St., Westminster
• Grades three, four, five and six: Al Meiklejohn Elementary, 13405 W. 83rd Pl., Arvada

Bus transportation will be provided for all Weber students to the host schools. A number of alternatives were considered from split class shifts, temporary buildings on-site and delaying the start of school. None of these plans were options the district considered safe and supportive for student needs. It is hoped that Weber students and staff will be back in their home school by October 15.

Fall groundbreakings and dedications

Jeffco Public Schools currently has completed 138 school construction projects and has 68 projects under construction and 34 projects in the design phase. All projects are part of the 2005-2010 Capital Improvement Program and funded from the 2004 $328.5 million bond. There are 102 projects remaining to be started in the program.

This month, Bear Creek K-8 School will start the school year in a new replacement building on a new site while Bear Creek High School breaks ground on a new facility and Chatfield Senior High School celebrates a new addition and remodel to their facility. In September, Fairmount and Hackberry Hill Elementary Schools will celebrate re-dedication ceremonies with extensive renovation to each school. In October, Lakewood High School will celebrate a new facility while Dakota Ridge High School prepares for a groundbreaking on an addition to their building.

Two new replacements of old preschools open this fall with new names, Norma Anderson Preschool in Wheat Ridge (formerly Fruitdale) and the John and Karen Litz Preschool in Golden (formerly Tanglewood).

All groundbreakings and dedications are open to the public. Other major construction projects in progress include Arvada West High School: a new replacement building will be completed in the fall of 2008. The new facility includes an auxiliary and main gymnasium, locker rooms, auditorium, music rooms, administration, cafeteria/commons, kitchen and core classrooms for math, English, special education, business, arts and wood technology.

Golden High School: a new 188,554 square foot facility will replace the original school in 2008. The two-story classroom wing is built in an “L” shape that encloses two sides of the new courtyard; the third side is flanked by the public areas of the building (cafeteria, auditorium and gym). A partnership with Jefferson County Open Space will provide funding for an artificial turf field.

Wheat Ridge High School: a combination of new construction, renovation and remodeling, will include: renovating the instrumental and vocal music classrooms, adding chemistry labs, prep rooms and classrooms, construction of a new auxiliary gymnasium and weight room and upgrading security, mechanical and electrical systems by fall 2008. A partnership with Open Space and community funding will provide an artificial turf field.
