Proposed legislation tied to education

As a Key Communicator, it is important to stay informed about potential changes in the law as it relates to K-12 education. Below are four bills currently being reviewed that may have an impact on Jeffco Public Schools:

HB-1118 (High School Graduation Requirements): This bill proposes that local districts must establish graduation requirements based on community input and consideration of guidelines adopted by State Board of Education. Introduced in Senate and assigned to Education Committee (Date Jan. 31).

SB-73 (English Competency Graduation Requirement): This bill establishes English language competency as a graduation requirement. Passed out of Senate Education Committee and assigned to Appropriations (Date Jan. 31). Not expected to pass out of Appropriations due to high cost implications for districts.

SB-131 (Math and Science Graduation Requirements) : This bill states that districts must require four years of math and four years of science, beginning for freshman starting after July 1, 2009 , as a condition of high school graduation. Allows districts to designate specific courses that meet the requirements. Introduced in Senate and assigned to Education Committee (Date Jan. 30).

SB-080 (Cervical Cancer Prevention): This bill has been amended to state that a female student between the ages of 11 and 18 and her parent/guardian shall be given information about the link between Human Papillomavirus and cervical cancer and the availability of a vaccine. No female student shall be admitted to the sixth grade in any school in Colorado unless she submits acceptable evidence to the school that she has been vaccinated, or that the student's parents have elected for the student not to receive the vaccine. Introduced to the Senate, amended and sent to the Appropriations Committee (Date Feb. 8).
