Jefferson County Board of Education approves teacher contract

By a unanimous vote on May 31, the Jefferson County Board of Education approved a new four-year contract for the district’s teachers.  The agreement has also been ratified by the members of the Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA) and will become effective September 1, 2007.  The new contract includes a four percent cost-of-living increase along with annual step (years of service) and level (educational credits) increases and medical benefits.

During contract negotiations, JCEA identified workload as a great concern for many teachers and you may have recently received a communication from JCEA about that issue.  The district did take positive, creative and concrete steps in the new contract to address teacher workload including:

  • Eliminating some assessments that took teacher time
  • An additional paid workday for all licensed staff
  • Additional paraprofessional (aide) time at elementary, middle and high schools

Recognizing that teachers continue to struggle with their workload, the district has formed a group of paid volunteer elementary teachers who will meet over the summer to try and find innovative solutions to the problem.

The recent increase in 3rd grade CSAP reading scores is an indication that some of the steps the district has taken around workload relief are making a positive difference in student learning.

Additionally, the superintendent meets on a regular basis with leaders from the teacher’s association to define issues and develop potential solutions.  The district is committed to working with JCEA in a partnership that will benefit teachers and students.

Send your comments about the teacher contract to the Board of Education.
