| Jefferson County Board of Education approves teacher contract By a unanimous vote on May 31, the Jefferson County Board of Education approved a new four-year contract for the district’s teachers. The agreement has also been ratified by the members of the Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA) and will become effective September 1, 2007. The new contract includes a four percent cost-of-living increase along with annual step (years of service) and level (educational credits) increases and medical benefits. During contract negotiations, JCEA identified workload as a great concern for many teachers and you may have recently received a communication from JCEA about that issue. The district did take positive, creative and concrete steps in the new contract to address teacher workload including:
Recognizing that teachers continue to struggle with their workload, the district has formed a group of paid volunteer elementary teachers who will meet over the summer to try and find innovative solutions to the problem. The recent increase in 3rd grade CSAP reading scores is an indication that some of the steps the district has taken around workload relief are making a positive difference in student learning. Additionally, the superintendent meets on a regular basis with leaders from the teacher’s association to define issues and develop potential solutions. The district is committed to working with JCEA in a partnership that will benefit teachers and students. Board to adopt 2007-08 budget in June The Board of Education received final input from the public regarding the 2007-08 budget on Thursday, May 31. Final adoption of the budget is scheduled for the board meeting on Thursday, June 14. 2007 Key Communique survey results Key communicators say the network they belong to for the purpose of receiving and sharing information on Jeffco Public Schools is working very well, according to results from the annual survey of 200-plus members. Provide feedback about this article Key Communicator Celebration of Excellence event Mark your calendars for Tuesday, October 16 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. (Education Center, Board Room) for the third annual Key Communicator's Celebration of Excellence. This reception is the district's way to say thanks to our Key Communicators and to celebrate the accomplishments of students, teachers, staff and our Jefferson County community. This wonderful evening includes individual and group represention of the best of the best in academics, athletics, arts, teachers, staff and community service. The event will again provide student entertainment and demonstrations. June 2007 Construction Fact Sheet School construction, funded from 2004 bonds, continues on-time and on-budget.
