Board of Education members elected, new officers named Incumbent School Board member Jane Barnes will serve another term after receiving more than 50 percent of the vote in the Nov. 6 election. She was running against Alameda High School PTSA President, Jeff Braa. Former Jefferson County District Attorney Dave Thomas ran unopposed for the seat vacated by board member Hereford Percy. At its regular business meeting on Thursday, Nov. 8, the Board of Education elected Scott Benefield president. Other officers elected for the next two years are as follows: Jane Barnes, first vice president; Dave Thomas, second vice president; Vince Chowdhury, treasurer and Sue Marinelli, secretary. Voters in Jefferson County have said 'yes' to Jeffco Public Schools’ Ballot Issue 3A which repeals a portion of a mill levy authorization in 1999. Over 76 percent gave the district the go-ahead to cancel a portion of the 1999 mill levy authorization. The repeal was seen as a housekeeping item that does not have any financial impact on voters. “The district thanks the voters of Jefferson County for their support of 3A,” said Superintendent Cindy Stevenson. “This allows us to go back to the voters at some point in the future and ask for a mill levy increase with taxpayers knowing exactly what they’re voting for,” she said. Celebration of Excellence event will continue in the fall Thanks to those who responded to the question in the last edition of the Key Communique regarding the timing of the 2008 Celebration of Excellence event. It looks like the majority of folks would like to see the event continue in the fall rather than the spring. School construction, funded from 2004 bonds, continues on-time and on-budget. Upcoming Board of Education meetings The Board of Education holds study/dialogue sessions (Seminar Room, 4th floor) and business meetings (Board Room, 5th floor) at the Educational Services Center, 1829 Denver West Drive, Bldg #27, Golden, unless otherwise noted.
