Healthy & Equitable Start & End Times

Jeffco Public Schools launched new healthy and equitable start and end times districtwide in the 2023-2024 school year.

The district aligned start and end times as much as possible to create consistency, make instruction more equitable for all students and improve student achievement.

Watch Deputy Superintendent Dr. Kym LeBlanc-Esparza discuss the importance of Healthy and Equitable Start and End Times.

Research shows that later start times for middle and high school students results in:

  • Improved student attendance.
  • Increased student achievement.
  • Higher graduation rates.
  • Better physical and emotional health, especially for high school students.

Why New Start and End Times?

Addressing the situation and problems

Historically, there were over 100 different school start and end times across schools in Jeffco before the 2023-24 school year. Some schools started at 7:15 a.m., while others started closer to 9:00 a.m. These different start times created different lengths of the school day and unequal amounts of in-classroom instruction time for students.

Other benefits of the initiative

  • Improve the social and emotional health of students, especially in high school.
  • Create an equitable school day length that ensures that all students receive the right amount of instructional time for their grade level:
    • Elementary - 6:50 hours to 7 hours
    • Middle - 7 hours to 7:15 hours
    • High - 7:15 hours to 7:20 hours
  • Provide a 35-minute lunch break for all schools.
  • Create more efficient, reliable and cost-effective transportation services, resulting in fewer canceled routes and cost savings for Jeffco.
