Licensed Educator Positions

Jeffco teachers create a warm environment that provides opportunities for all students to grow intellectually, emotionally and psychologically to reach and exceed their potential.

Using research-evidenced practices and instructional strategies licensed educators foster intellectual curiosity and a love of learning among their students.

Teacher and students in class

They develop the whole child and equip students for the 21st-century world with critical thinking and reasoning skills that prepare them to be successful in college, career and life. Whether elementary or secondary, our teachers build bright futures.

Licensed Educator Positions: Teachers

Elementary teachers must hold a valid Colorado teaching license and pass the Praxis test or an approved out-of-state content exam. Secondary teachers (seventh through twelfth grades) must hold a valid Colorado teaching license with the appropriate in-field endorsement for the content they will be teaching.

Licensed Educator Positions: Special Service Providers

It takes a team of providers to prepare all of our students for bright futures. Jeffco values the service of counselors, social workers, school psychologists and speech-language pathologists. Our Special Service Providers (SSP) are crucial to our students' success.

Visit the Jeffco careers page for further details. Search for current openings under the job family: “Special Ed Related Services."

Grow Your Career with Jeffco: Become a Licensed Teacher

At Jeffco Public Schools, we believe our greatest strength is our people. Many of our talented educators and support professionals are already making a lasting impact on students every day - and we are proud to support your continued growth and career development. If you're ready to take the next step and become a licensed teacher, Jeffco is here to help you navigate your pathway to the classroom.

Pathways to Teacher Licensure

Whether you're a current paraprofessional, para educator, or another Jeffco team member interested in teaching, there are multiple routes to earning your Colorado teaching license. For more information, you can also visit the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) Educator Career Navigation page. It is important to choose a program that is right for you - Teach Colorado is a wonderful non-profit organization that offers 1:1 coaching.

1. Para to Teacher Pathway (P-TAP)

Jeffco is proud to partner with CU Denver on the Para to Teacher Advancement Pathway (P-TAP) program - designed specifically for current paraprofessionals who want to become licensed teachers.

  • P-TAP provides a flexible and affordable route for Jeffco paras to earn a Bachelor's degree and Colorado teaching license.
  • Coursework is online and evening-based, allowing you to continue working while completing your degree.
  • Students receive field-based learning experiences in Jeffco classrooms and mentorship throughout the program.
  • Jeffco supports participating employees through coordination with CU Denver and ongoing career guidance.

Learn more about P-TAP at CU Denver's Para to Teacher Pathway and explore how you can continue growing your career right here in Jeffco.

2. Alternative Licensure Programs

If you already hold a bachelor's degree (in any field), an Alternative Licensure Program allows you to work as a teacher while completing the requirements for a Colorado teaching license. Please see the most up to date information on Alternative Licensure from the Colorado Department of Education (CDE).

  • If hired as a teacher under an Alternative License, you'll complete coursework and mentorship while you teach.
  • Many programs can be completed in one to two years.
  • Alternative Licensure Programs are often significantly more affordable than a traditional bachelors or masters degree.
  • Common approved programs include those offered through:

Jeffco often hires and supports educators participating in alternative programs. For guidance, contact Jeffco's Talent Acquisition Team or visit the CDE website for program details.

3. Traditional Bachelor of Education Programs

If you don't yet hold a bachelor's degree, a traditional teach preparation program is a great option.

  • These programs combine education coursework with supervised student teaching.
  • Upon graduation, you'll be eligible to apply for a CO teaching license.
  • Many local universities and colleges offer flexible or online options for working adults

Jeffco encourages current employees to explore degree pathways that align with your long-term goals and areas of interest (such as elementary education, special education, or secondary content areas)

4. Traditional Master of Education (M.Ed.) Programs

If you already have a bachelor's degree and prefer a more traditional route (rather than an alternative license), you can complete a Master of Education program that leads to initial teacher licensure.

  • These programs typically include coursework, practicum experiences, and student teaching.
  • Many universities offer accelerated or evening programs designed for working professionals.
  • This option allows you to earn both a graduate degree and licensure simultaneously.
  • Holding a master's degree will move you up on the Jeffco licensed educator pay scale.
