Encouraging Your Child’s Self-Advocacy in the Time of COVID

How can we serve our gifted learners when life seems so chaotic? Even in the best of times, it’s often a struggle to connect them with the challenges that suit their needs and the social-emotional support that sustains them. And during the ever-changing “new normal” of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are even more variables, obstacles, and complications. Yet, there is much that we can do. Join Deb Douglas as she reveals the many ways we can partner with our students, bolstering their resiliency, supporting their needs, and guiding them toward self-advocacy.  With our help, they can craft their own unique routes to graduation (and beyond) despite the circumstances.

Deb Douglas, MS C&I, was a high school English teacher before coordinating gifted programming for Manitowoc (WI) Public Schools for over 20 years. She is past president of the Wisconsin Association for Talented and Gifted, a member of NAGC’s Parent Advisory Board, and a frequent presenter at state, national, and international conferences. Her book, The Power of Self-Advocacy: Teaching the Four Essential Steps to Success, is available from Free Spirit Publishing. She and Dr. Joy Davis are co-editors of No More Dreams Deferred: Breaking the Barriers to Self-Advocacy for Underserved Gifted Learners (Free spirit Publishing, Fall 2021).
