Rose Stein International Elementary Takes Top Awards at VEX Robotics Qualifying Competition

Rose Stein studentsCongratulations to Rose Stein International Elementary’s VEX Robotics teams, who took first and second place, as well as the Judge’s Award, at the state qualifying competition! Teacher Liz Mulligan worked with a group of 10 fifth- and sixth-graders, meeting before school on Fridays to research and build their designs. Students also used their Passion Project time to work on their designs.

Mulligan began with two VEX Robotics kits she received through her Title I technology cohort, supervised by Karrie Zanetti. From there, she was able to expand her vision of a Robotics Club at Rose Stein through the support of Principal Esther Valdez, Thrivent Financial, and another community donor. It really has been a Jeffco project; Kyle Walker (the DTL at Kullerstrand Elementary) mentored Mulligan and organized the competition, Three Creeks K-8 hosted, Fairmount Elementary shared resources and tips, and the School of Mines helped judge...it really was an amazing event where Jeffco came together.

For all of the parents and students at Rose Stein, this was their first experience with robotics and a robotics competition. When planning this event, Mulligan wanted to make sure it was inclusive of all the school’s families. For example, they included signage in English and Spanish to make the day accessible to everyone. Mulligan also worked hard to promote girl participation. The team that won the Judge's Award was an all-girls team!

Mulligan’s goal is to continue to help highly-impacted kids have access to technology and STEM, and she believes this has been a life-changing experience for her students. Many of them are now hoping to go to Mines and become an engineer. She cannot wait to see how this club will continue to grow and evolve.
