SCFD logoCreighton Middle School was selected for the 2018-19 school year to participate in the Alliance Project Grant, along with their partner school Slater Elementary. This is the second year the schools have been selected to participate. Only twelve public schools were selected by application from the seven counties in the metro area.

The purpose of the Alliance Project is to provide educational outreach partnering the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) science and cultural organizations with teachers in creating curriculum applications and learning opportunities for students. The grant is made available from the Scientific and Cultural Collaborative, a non-profit organization comprise of arts, culture, and science who are funded by the SCFD: a cultural tax in seven-county area providing support to over 300 non-profit groups.

“This grant has been wonderful for CMS students,” said instructional coach Elaine Curcurio. “It provided teachers with a collaborative process for them to identify and retain resources and programming that enhances student exploration of content, and the language attached to the content, by creating authentic tasks for students that partner with the culture.”

Last year, Creighton focused on eighth-grade core classrooms in science and social studies, and the students who needed English language supports. They also partnered with Slater elementary, one of the Articulation Area’s neighborhood elementary schools, to create their own programming ties with Alliance resources at their site. Slater students attended two of Creighton’s project events; The Cherry Creek Mobile Art Show, and Shakespeare in the parking lot.

This year, Creighton will continue to partner with Slater Elementary sixth-graders. Their goal is to better support student readiness for learning as they transition to Creighton the following year. New this year, they will concentrate on seventh-grade social studies and science but will keep the focus on English language development.
