On January 10, the amazing kids of the Fairmount Production Studio at Fairmount Elementary went on a field trip to the Communications Department. The six students, Evelyn Donaldson, Lila Qualteri, Lily Schneck, Oliver Hamilton, Ruby Stewart, and Tyler Penney spent the day with the Communications Department, along with their teachers, Angie Blomquist, and Andi Jonson. Below is what the students wrote about their experience.

Fairmount Production StudioWe were so excited. Our plan was to meet with the employees that worked in the Communications Department in Jeffco Public Schools. The Production Studio drove to the Education Center in two cars to meet them. Cameron Bell, Communications Specialist, Public Information & Media, gave us a tour and introduced us to the six-person staff. They taught us how to be better at our job at school making news videos. Jack Maher, the video editor, helped us make our own video. We were inspired by new techniques like animation, video backgrounds, and sound effects for a fun flexibility video that we made after writing our own scripts. We filed away this knowledge so we could later use it back at our own school.

Dennis Pleuss, who is in charge of youth sports reporting, showed us examples of student interviews, and he provided tips about how to interview someone properly. Using our new knowledge, we interviewed Dr. Jason Glass on FacebookLive. The Fairmount Production Studio asked him about 5A and 5B, if he spent money equally, and if he made everybody happy.

In addition, we had a catered, working lunch. They ordered us all ham/turkey and cheese sandwiches that included goldfish and a cookie. After lunch, Devan Crean and Tanya Wheeler-Berliner talked to us how to keep your reader, who only has an attention span of eight seconds (which is shorter than a goldfish) engaged. In fact, we hope you are still reading this article!

Flashing back to the beginning, we had so many questions, we posted them on a whiteboard. By the end of the field trip, we realized each question had been answered in a fun way. Instead of being told to us they were showing us the answers and solutions throughout the day. This field trip exceeded all of our expectations!
