School Choice

Under No Child Left Behind, the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and Jeffco Public Schools are required to ensure that all schools meet state reading and math academic proficiency targets. CDE and the district are required to intervene in schools that persistently do not meet these targets. These interventions are identified as "Priority Improvement" and "Turnaround."

Students who attend a Title I-funded school that is identified for Priority Improvement or Turnaround must be given the option of public school choice. This allows all students attending that school the option to transfer to another public school not in Priority Improvement or Turnaround.

The option of school choice must be made available to all students enrolled in Priority Improvement and Turnaround schools, until the school comes off Priority Improvement and Turnaround. Students who exercise their right to attend another school must be given the option to continue to attend that school until they complete the highest grade of that school, even if the original school is no longer in Priority Improvement and Turnaround.

Districts must provide transportation for students who transferred from a school on Priority Improvement or Turnaround. The list below identifies which schools children may opt to attend. While students may continue to attend the school of option even after the original school is no longer in PI or TA status, transportation becomes the responsibility of the family.
