Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)

In Jeffco, the Cognitive Abilities Test is used as a universal screener for all second graders and 5th graders without a cognitive score.

CogAT is made up of three sections, called batteries: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Nonverbal/Figurative Reasoning. Each battery is designed to assess specific reasoning skills in each area that correlate strongly to academic success.  

CogAT provides:

• Universal screening to support identification and programming for student strengths (HB1102). 
• A data point to help teachers understand the instructional informational needs of every learner.
• A communication tool to help parents understand their child's strengths.
• Under Colorado State HB1077 Exceptional Children’s Educational Act (ECEA), Jeffco Public Schools also uses CogAT data as part of a body of evidence to help identify students for Jeffco Gifted and Talented programming. 

Jeffco typically administers the CogAT to second graders and 5th graders without a pervious cognitive score in October.

CogAT scores for students who tested will be shared via Student Insights on November 21, 2025 after 4 p.m.
