The KEA is a formative, observational assessment tool meant to measure school readiness skills of students entering kindergarten during the first 60 days of school. Teachers will set up scenarios to observe students in different situations to observe where students are at along developmental progressions. Teachers then record observations in a local reporting tool where reports can then be accessed to support with instruction and communication to families.
The areas observed are designed to move along a progression related to child development. Each area demonstrates developmentally appropriate ranges of where students could be within the 60th day of school. The intent of the assessment is to ensure that all students have all of the necessary skills to learn at school. The assessment is meant to help teachers know where their students are at in those skills, what to do next, and how to support them. The following are the areas in which students are observed:
- Engagement in Self-Selected Activities
- Object Counting
- Emotional Literacy
- Crossing Midline
- Grip & Manipulation
- Hand Dominance
- Following Directions
- Book Orientation
- Letter Naming
- Print Awareness
