Supporting Early Literacy: Jeffco Includes Dyslexia Screener Measure for K-3 Students
Jeffco Public Schools is pleased to announce that we will be joining other Colorado districts in implementing a universal dyslexia screener for students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade in December of 2025.
At Jeffco Public Schools, we are deeply committed to ensuring every student builds a strong early literacy foundation. To further support this commitment, beginning in December, we will be incorporating a brief dyslexia screener called Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) as part of our existing DIBELS 8 and Lectura mid-year assessments.
This proactive approach allows us to identify students who may benefit from additional reading support early on. The RAN subtest is a quick and effective tool that alongside DIBELS 8/Lectura helps us gain valuable insights into a student's level of risk for reading difficulty.
We believe this is an important step in our ongoing efforts to support all learners in Jeffco Public Schools.
Jeffco K-3 teachers will be trained on next steps and will share reports and other information with families during Spring 2026 conferences.
Stay tuned to this website for further updates and resources regarding dyslexia support in Jeffco Public Schools.
Nationally, one out of five people are identified with dyslexia. In Jeffco, we recognize that dyslexia affects a similar ratio of our students and may impact their education. Some, but not all, of these students are identified through an Individualized Education Program (IEP), Advanced Learning Plan, READ Plan or a 504 Plan.
This page is intended to empower the Jeffco community by increasing awareness and utilizing resources about dyslexia. This will allow Jeffco educators and the community to work in partnership with each other to create a more cohesive educational program for students with dyslexia.
Jeffco's Dyslexia Screener Mission
Through K-3 dyslexia screening and collaborative partnerships with families and educators, we proactively identify students at-risk, provide timely interventions, and foster an inclusive learning environment that empowers every child with the literacy skills and confidence they need to be successful readers and writers.
What is Dyslexia?
The formal definition of dyslexia by the International Dyslexia Association is:
“Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede the growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.”
