Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Center Programs
The ASD Center Program is a center-based program consisting of specialized classrooms located within regular school buildings across the district. It is part of Jeffco’s continuum of placement options available for students receiving special education services. These programs have smaller class sizes and create an inclusive learning environment. The program provides support in areas where students might need extra help, such as:
- Social and emotional learning including behavioral support
- Communication skills
- Support for their general education classes
- Executive Functioning
Jeffco ASD programs use the Colorado Department of Education’s Autism Program Quality Indicators.
Who Are Autism Spectrum Disorder Centers For?
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Center Programs serve a specific population of students within Jeffco Public Schools:
- The ASD center programs are part of Jeffco’s continuum of placement options for students in special education.
- These programs are designed for students who require intensive support and additional resources with a focus on their individualized needs.
- Most students can be supported in their neighborhood school and do not need center programming.
Placement in our ASD program is determined by your child's Individualized Education Program (IEP) team based on their unique needs.
- No medical diagnosis or specific autism label is required for consideration.
- Placement in a center-based program is solely decided by the IEP team.
In summary, the ASD Center Programs serve students in special education whose IEP teams have determined that their individualized needs for intensive support are best met within this specific center-based setting, regardless of whether they have a medical diagnosis of autism.
How Do Autism Spectrum Disorder Centers Serve Students?
The ASD Center Programs serve students by providing a structured environment with focused support in several key areas, aiming to build their independence.
Here are some of the ways they serve students:
Program Goal
The main goal of the ASD Center Program is to help students build independence. The IEP team regularly reviews data about a student's progress to decide when they are ready to move out of the ASD program. This decision is based on the student consistently doing well independently in the regular classroom with their usual IEP support, and showing they can use coping skills, regulate themselves, and behave safely.
