The Executive High School Internship Program is a program offered through WarrenTech for high academic high school seniors. It is designed to allow 200 students each year to gain real-world experiences in the career field they hope to pursue by completing a 100-hour non-paid internship. The fall and spring semesters of the 2020-2021 school year looked different for many interns, especially future engineers. Lockheed Martin has been a strong supporter of the Executive High School Internship Program for many years, but due to the Pandemic and most of the engineers at Lockheed Martin working remotely or hybrid, a new type of internship experience was created.

The Executive High School Internship Program taught by Sharon Usher and Jenny Herbaugh, collaborated with Dr. Gregg Cannady of STEM School Highlands Ranch, and several mentors at Lockheed Martin to design this program. Understanding that the program would be virtual for this semester, the idea to integrate the students with “Like-Minded” students from other schools in Colorado became the focus.
Ten students from Jeffco Public Schools, Ten students from STEM School Highlands Ranch, two students from Calhan, and one from Durango High School made up the interns for this semester.

The students were put into four groups, given a crash course on project management, assigned professional mentors from Lockheed Martin, and turned loose to design a project of interest. In addition to the group project, they have been treated to a weekly speaker forum with speakers from different departments within Lockheed Martin. The students have been able to learn from and ask questions in this small group format.

The students will tell you that not only are they more aware of what an engineer career field looks like, but they have also learned about collaboration, communication, project management, research and development, problem-solving, deductive reasoning, and learning in a virtual environment. This model was also used with our Healthcare interns and this coming summer we will do a similar model with our legal interns.
