Immigration Resources

Jeffco Public Schools embraces and honors diversity in all forms. One of our District’s core beliefs is a commitment to providing a safe, caring, and welcoming environment where all students, staff, and families are valued and supported.

We understand that recent national and local events related to immigration rights and policies have made many Jeffco community members feel concerned about the safety and wellness of students in our public schools. We want to reassure all stakeholders that we continue to be committed to providing a safe and welcoming learning environment for all our students and strive to provide the supports and resources necessary for all students to succeed.

Frequently Asked Questions (también en español)

en Español

Q: Do staff at school ask for a child’s immigration status upon enrollment?
A: No. Jeffco Public Schools has an obligation to enroll students regardless of their immigration status and without discrimination on the basis of ethnicity or race, color, or national origin. Staff are routinely trained on this obligation.

Q: What impact does immigration status have on students attending school?
A: None.

Q: Will immigration enforcement actions take place on school grounds?
A: The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE) currently designates schools as sensitive locations. ICE, by their own regulations, may only enter sensitive locations with prior approval of one of their top officials or in an emergency such as an imminent risk of death, violence, or physical harm to person or property.

Q: Will Jeffco Public Schools staff give student and family information to ICE?
A: All children in the United States are entitled to equal access to public education regardless of their status including, but not limited to, their immigration status. We do not ask for immigration status when students enroll in our schools. In addition, if we became aware of a student’s immigration status, we would not voluntarily share that information with any government agency including ICE. If we receive a request for student or family information from a government agency, the request would be processed through our district student records and legal offices. These teams work diligently to protect student and family information in adherence to the law.

Q: Will my child be able to continue going to school?
A: Yes. Every school-aged child that lives in Jefferson County has a right to attend a Jeffco Public Schools. We have no indication this right will change.

Q: If I am a parent or guardian and I am worried about being detained while my child is at school, what should I do?

A: If any parent is detained during school hours and their child is not picked up from school, school staff will contact all emergency contacts listed in Jeffco Connect to ensure the student is picked up from school and safe. School staff will provide ongoing support for the students and their emotional needs. Please ensure your emergency contact information is current iJeffco Connect. You can update this information at any time through your school or on-line: https://jeffcoconnect.jeffco.k12.co.us/

Q: What should I do if I feel my student is experiencing discrimination or harassment?
A: Jeffco Public Schools works hard to provide a safe, respectful, welcoming environment for all students. If you feel you have been a victim of, or witness to, discrimination or harassment please report it immediately to your school administration. The district has strict policies regarding discrimination, harassment, and bullying; see the Code of Conduct  Student/Family handbook (Spanish) for details.
