Early Access

Due to the remote learning conditions we are adjusting our Early Access timeline. On Friday, April 3, 2020, Jefferson County Public Schools, along with 13 other districts, made the decision to suspend in-person instruction for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. Jeffco will continue with their remote learning plan through the end of this school year.  Since this is an ever evolving situation, we will be working to create a modified timeline to guide the Early Access process  based on the new information that our district is receiving from the State.

We know there are many unanswered questions. We are working to determine the answers to these and will be sharing that information as soon as possible. We appreciate your ongoing support, trust, and patience as we work through these challenging issues and uncertain times as a community.

To meet the needs of highly advanced children who have not yet entered kindergarten or first grade, Jeffco Public Schools may grant early entrance to school, for highly advanced gifted children, with a body of evidence at or above the 97th percentile, who do not meet the age requirements outlined in Board Policy JEB.  This process is not for typical children who miss the October 1 Kindergarten/First Grade entrance date.

For the requirements of Early Access to Kindergarten/First Grade, see JEFFCO BOARD OF EDUCATION POLICY - IHBB

Early Access age requirements:

  • The student must reach the age of four by October 1 for kindergarten.

  • The student must reach the age of five by October 1 for grade one.

Who will benefit from Early Access? Colorado regulations [CRS 22-20-204(2)] define that a 4-year old or 5-year old child who is “highly advanced gifted child” may be eligible for early access for kindergarten or first grade, respectively.  The child is academically gifted, socially and emotionally mature and in the top 3 percent or less of the gifted population.
