Planning for the Future of the Jefferson Articulation Area
Since the 1950s, the Jefferson area schools have proudly educated diverse generations of Saints who contribute to a vibrant Jeffco Public Schools community. Today, after decades of declining enrollment, the Jefferson articulation area serves the fewest number of students in Jeffco. Jefferson Jr/Sr serves just around 600 students in grades 7-12 whereas other similar schools serve 980-1200 students.
Even with extra funding, it has become increasingly difficult to provide a secondary education experience that provides a wide variety of core academic classes, electives, and extracurricular activities that students need, deserve, and desire. The Jefferson community has expressed a clear desire for change.
On June 11, 2024, the Edgewater Collective wrote:
Without blaming hard working educators, we need to acknowledge that Jefferson is in need of renovation and redesign. Incremental changes haven’t worked. We’ve been through too many principals. Our children, families, and educators deserve to be part of conversations where we dream big about what could be at Jefferson.
A districtwide boundary study published in the spring of 2024 raised concerns about sustainability and recommended that the district engage with the community to plan for the future.
Next Steps
The district does not have plans to bring forward a proposal to the Board of Education (Board). In addition, the planning year that was initially considered, during which time the school would have closed, is now off the table. We are slowing down the process.
On Wednesday, April 30, 2025, a public workshop designed and led by the Edgewater Collective and its Jefferson Redesigned Steering Committee will be held at the Jefferson Jr/Sr Library. Dr. Ron Cabrera will facilitate the meeting and district staff will attend to observe and listen.
District staff will provide a public update to the Board on the district work at the Wednesday, May 7 study session.
Our hope is that you will continue to stay engaged in this process by attending meetings or checking this webpage for the latest information. We are committed to coming back to the community by September 2025 for a status update on the collaborative work.
Spring 2025 Community Engagement
The district invited families, students, community members and staff to a series of conversations to begin exploring options to face Jefferson Jr/Sr’s declining enrollment trends, with an emphasis on discussing school models that are designed to support a small secondary student population.
From January – April 2025, the district facilitated opportunities to hear input from stakeholders. Expand the following section to view the engagement opportunities that were offered.
Upcoming Community Engagement Opportunities
Two Option School Models
Jeffco, with support of researchers, explored potential high school option school models that are delivering high quality instruction and extraordinary experiences to students across the country. The district identified two viable option school models to share with the community as a starting point for discussion.
