Property Disposition

In alignment with Jeffco Public Schools’ Regional Opportunities for Thriving Schools initiative, the district closed 16 elementary schools at the conclusion of the 2022-23 school year and a K-8 school at the end of the 2023-24 school year. This was in addition to three schools that were already vacant. Jeffco must determine whether to retain each property for its own future use and, if not, what to do with each property (see District Policy DN – School Properties Disposition).

Jeffco’s Property Disposition Process
For each of Jeffco’s unused properties, a four-step process is followed to determine its future use. During this multi-year process, Jeffco will fully monitor and maintain each building.
Learn more about where each school property is in the Disposition Process (surplus property, property sold or leased, property will not be surplused, etc.), below.
Four-Step Property Disposition Process
Municipal Interest Process
Jeffco added a “municipal interest process” to its Property Disposition process, following feedback from city leaders within the district. This additional step allows time for Jeffco and the relevant city or county to discuss and evaluate the proposed use of the property before it is marketed for sale.
We contact municipalities early in our process to inform them about properties in their area that will soon be available for sale. If a property enters our regular surplus process, it means that the municipality did not express interest in acquiring the property.
Properties Identified as Surplus
The Board of Education voted to surplus the following properties on February 12, 2026, following a staff presentation at the February 4 study session. A surplus vote formally begins the disposition process of the property, but it does not mean the property will be immediately sold or leased.
Property surplus status gives district staff the flexibility to explore market interest in any of the properties and begin the process of engaging impacted communities and the relevant municipalities where the properties are located. Please check this webpage periodically for updates on upcoming events and news, and sign up for the Property Disposition newsletter to stay informed.
