Sustainability

At Jeffco Public Schools, we believe that sustainability is fundamental to our mission of preparing all students for a successful future. Our sustainability efforts aim to:

  • Steward Resources Responsibly - Reduce utility costs and operational inefficiencies to maximize resources for student learning. Through energy and water conservation, waste reduction and strategic investments, we aim to make every dollar count.
  • Prepare Students for a Changing World - Equip students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences to lead in a sustainable future. From climate literacy to hands-on environmental education, we integrate sustainability into the curriculum and school culture.
  • Lead by Example - Align with local and state climate goals while demonstrating leadership in sustainability practices that benefit our communities now and for generations to come.

Policy & Planning

Sustainability Policy

Jeffco Public Schools is aligning its sustainability efforts with the Board of Education’s Sustainability Ends Statement,  a commitment to environmental responsibility and climate action that was championed by student activists across the district. Student leadership helped elevate environmental sustainability as a districtwide priority. In response, Jeffco is developing a District Sustainability Policy that will outline how sustainability is embedded into everyday decision-making, operations, and educational practices. This policy will serve as a long-term framework to guide continuous improvement and advance sustainability across all schools and departments.

Sustainability News

Drought Guidelines

Colorado is currently experiencing drought conditions, and many regional water providers have enacted Stage 1 drought restrictions. Jeffco Public Schools operates facilities across multiple municipalities and water districts, each with unique requirements. This guidance establishes district-wide expectations to ensure compliance, consistency, and responsible stewardship.

Proposed Policy EA and EA-R

Jeffco is proposing the addition of a new policy and regulation to address environmental sustainability and energy and water conservation.

Jeffco Public Schools Authorizes Electric Bus Pilot

Jeffco is exploring an innovative electric bus pilot program that could bring six zero-emission buses to the district’s Central Terminal at no upfront cost. The electric buses would cut greenhouse gas emissions in half, eliminate tailpipe pollution and use new vehicle-to-grid technology that allows stored energy to be sent back to the electrical grid during peak times or emergencies.
