Measles
Measles is a viral infection that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours and someone who has it is contagious from four days before to four days after a rash appears. While measles can affect individuals of any age, young children, pregnant individuals and those with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk for complications. Children’s Hospital Colorado and Jefferson County Public Health have helpful information about measles disease and immunizations for families.
Protecting your child
Our priority is the safety and well-being of all students and staff. We strongly encourage all students to receive the MMR vaccine as soon as possible.
Where can I get vaccinated?
- Your primary healthcare provider.
- JCPH offers both scheduled and walk-in appointments at its Lakewood clinic. Vaccines are available at an affordable cost for those who are uninsured or underinsured, and they accept several forms of private insurance and Medicaid. Call 303-239-7040 for more information or to make an appointment.
- Vaccinations are also available at Stride Community Health Center at Alameda High School. Call 303-738-9043 for more information or to make an appointment.
For additional information about where to get immunizations, visit the Jefferson County Public Health website.
What should I do if I suspect my child or I may have measles?
If you suspect you or your child has measles, call or message your healthcare provider or an urgent care provider for instructions. To avoid possibly exposing others, please call before going in person.
What happens if there is a measles exposure at school?
Per Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) requirements:
In the event of measles exposure, individuals without proof of immunity (such as vaccination records or laboratory testing proving past infection) may not attend school for up to 21 days after their last known exposure, as directed by public health officials. This applies to all school-related activities, including classes, extracurricular activities, athletics and school events.
Jeffco maintains student vaccination records as part of each student’s school file. If your child has recently been vaccinated, please share that information with your school nurse by calling your child’s school. You may have received a letter from your school if we don't have a record or if your child is unvaccinated.
Thank you for helping keep our school communities healthy.
